Frieda learned about Girls Group when her site leader, Kia Sweeney, came to her school to recruit new members. Frieda was a sophomore in high school at the time, and decided to join Girls Group because she felt like it would offer her a great opportunity to network and get out of the house more. In addition to networking, Frieda explained that she was grateful to meet some pretty awesome mentors through the program. “[Meeting the mentors] was one of my most favorite things about this program,” she said.
Ever since she joined Girls Group over five years ago, Frieda has been an active member. Over the years, Frieda was involved in a number of programs and events including Wrap Around, several Girls Group fundraisers, and networking events. Frieda reflected, “Girls Group was a major outlet for me and allowed me to branch out and meet new people.” She is now a student at Wayne State University and still remains active in Girls Group’s program for adult participants, Women of Purpose.
During an interview with staff, Frieda reflected on some of the unexpected challenges she faced over the past few years as she navigated the global pandemic. “It took away my senior year of high school along with a proper college experience,” she explained, “but the pandemic wasn’t all negative. Although there were some cons to this pandemic, I was able to expand the way that I learned by becoming more open to remote learning… I have never been a huge fan of online classes, but I have learned to develop a love-hate relationship with them,” she laughed.
Moving forward, once she graduates with her undergraduate degree, she plans on completing Physician Associate (PA) school. Once she completes school, her goal is to become a pediatrician PA with a concentration in Obstetrics. She plans to reach that goal by completing her remaining undergraduate years at Wayne State University then beginning PA school wherever she sees best fit!
